Building Better Spaces. Responsibly.
At Portobello America, sustainability is not a separate initiative.
It is embedded in how we design, manufacture, innovate, and build relationships.
From responsibly sourced materials and transparent product information to community engagement and associate wellbeing, every decision contributes to a future where beautiful spaces and responsible practices go hand in hand.
Because creating lasting value means caring for people, places, and the generations that will experience them.
Sustainability That
Creates Value
We believe sustainability and progress go hand in hand.
For distributors, architects, designers, builders, homeowners, and communities, sustainability is not about compromising performance or aesthetics. It is about making better choices that create healthier spaces, stronger communities, and long-term value.
At our Baxter, Tennessee manufacturing facility, sustainability guides how we produce, operate, innovate, and grow.
Our commitment is built on three interconnected ESG pillars:
SOCIAL | Our People Creating opportunities, well-being, and meaningful connections.
ENVIRONMENT | Eco-Efficiency Reducing environmental impact through smarter manufacturing and product innovation.
GOVERNANCE | Our Business Building trust through transparency, responsibility, and long-term partnerships.
Social: Our People
People are at the heart of everything we do.
Creating a sustainable future starts with creating an environment where associates feel safe, valued, supported, and empowered.
Through continuous training, workplace safety initiatives, wellness programs, community engagement activities, and employee-led sustainability efforts, we invest in the people who make our company stronger every day.
When people feel connected to a purpose, organizations and communities become stronger.
Eco-Efficiency: Our Product
We believe sustainability means creating products that perform beautifully for years to come while contributing to healthier, more responsible spaces.
All Portobello America products manufactured in Baxter are supported by Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), providing transparent, lifecycle-based environmental impact data verified to international standards. Combined with up to 62% pre-consumer recycled content, our products help support sustainability goals while maintaining the performance and durability expected from porcelain surfaces.
Our factory has achieved Green Squared® Certification, one of the tile industry’s leading recognitions for sustainability and responsible manufacturing. Based on the ANSI A138.1 standard, it verifies rigorous environmental and social criteria across manufacturing, product performance, end-of-life management, and corporate governance.
Our products may also contribute to LEED-certified projects through material transparency, responsible sourcing, and environmental performance.
Together, these achievements reflect our commitment to reducing environmental impact while creating surfaces made to last.
Portobello Products Journey
Learn all about the stages Portobello products go through and how the company handles each of these stages
1
Raw Materials
A mixture of clays (ball clays & kaolin), fluo (feldspar & nepheline) and recycled content (green & fired scrap)
2
Body Preparation
Mixing, grinding, and homogenizing raw materials with water, then drying to form the ideal product base
3
Press
Powder (body slip) is pressed to form the initial “green” tile, which are then dried to reduce moisture content.
4
Glaze Line & Inkjet
Base colors, decorations and designs printed then overglaze added, creating “green” tiles.
5
Kiln
Roller hearth kiln moves tiles from unfired to fired state. Porcellan America’s ceramic roller kiln is an impressive 200 metres long, the same length as 2 soccer pitches.
6
Rectify & Polish
Rectifying provides precise tile edges; polishing ensures a smooth finish.
7
Sorting, Quality & Packaging
Quality control, state of the art automated packing and warehousing.
8
